Overview
B&P Tunnel Replacement Program
The B&P Tunnel Replacement Program is a comprehensive plan that will modernize a 10-mile section of the Northeast Corridor in Baltimore, MD.
The Program aims to promote a more sustainable future with electrified trains, enhance passenger safety with modern fire and life safety systems, and create time savings for the traveling public with faster track speeds.
The new 4-mile Frederick Douglass Tunnel will replace the 150-year-old B&P Tunnel that is impacted by age-related issues and is a bottleneck for the operations of Maryland Area Regional Commuter (MARC) and Amtrak passenger trains.
In addition to the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, the Program includes a new West Baltimore MARC Station, bridge replacements to accommodate the re-alignment of the Northeast Corridor, and new rail systems, track and railroad infrastructure.
Construction of the New Tunnel
The Project will feature two new high-capacity tunnel tubes designed for electrified Amtrak and MARC passenger trains, with each tube approximately two miles in length. Other major scope elements include the construction of below-grade components such as bored tunnels, mined caverns, cross-passages, and other substructures, as well as the excavation of the running tunnels and ventilation facilities in several locations.
